The regular meeting of the Wo man’s Missionary Auxiliary of Steele street church occurred Monday after noon in the ladies’ parlor, the presi dent, Mrs. Linda Williams, being ir the chair. Quarterly reports were received from all circles. A very interesting program was given, Mrs. P. J. Barringer present ing Stewardship,” and Mesdames L. C. Davis and S. T. Ingram giv ing inttresting article on work in the foreign mission fields. Halcyon C3ub. Mrs. S. V. Scott was hostess to the Halcyon Club Tuesday afternoon there being three tables of bridge ir play. High score prize, a flask of per fume, was won by Mrs. J. G. Formy Duval. When cards were laid aside the hostess served angel food cake cream, and salted nuts. Mrs. Thomp son, of Georgia, house guest of Mrs O. P. Makepeace, was a visitor. The club will be entertained next weeli bv Mrs. W. G. Brown, at her home ir Carthage. Miss Yarborough Is Hostess. Miss Nell Yarborough was hostess to a number of friends at a most de lightful chicken supper last Wednes day evening at the home of her cou sin, Mrs. R. E. Marke, near Colon. Following a delicious chicken sup per the crowd enjoyed radio music and dancing for some time. Present were Misses Elsie Monroe, Elizabeth McIntosh, Patttie Cross of Raleigh, Mary Thomas, Mrs. H. P. Edwards, of Panama City, Fla., Messrs. R. E. Marks and Love Heins. Tournament. — Mrs. G. W. Anderson’s group of Camp Fire girls gave a most enjoy able bridge and rook tournament Thursday evening in the ball room of the Wilrik. Ladies’ bridge prize was won by Mrs. Jessie Griffm, Men’s prize, by Mr: S. Q. Kimrey, and low score prize by Mrs. B. B. Kammer. Mrs F. B. Van Sant was winner of the rook prize. During the evening the Camp Fire girls sold candy and cold drinks, and quite a substantial sum was realized toward the national dues. Mrs. Ingram Gives Beautiful Party. A most beautiful porch party was given Wednesday afternoon i by Mrs J. R. IngTam at her hospitable home on Hawkins Avenue. The spacious porch was a scene oi ^reat beauty with its banckground oJ shrubbery and luxuriant ferns,agains1 which masses of brilliant flowers cre ated great spots of color. 1 Nine tables were arranged foi bridge, the players finding their posi tions by means of attractive tallies passed by Mrs. C. Elizabeth Gilliam Gives Party. Elizabeth Gilliam was hostess to a i number of her friends last week at a very delightful party at the home ‘ of fier parents, Mr. and Mrs. John r W. Gilliam, on End or street. Three tables were made up for rook, and the games were most in teresting. High score prizes were won by J. W. Stout, Jr. In a very humorous contest the prize was won by Wilson Howard. Progressive con versation also formed part of the ev ening’s diverson. ^A delicious ice course was served. A most successful and delightful meeting of the Young Women’s Wes ley Bible Class-of Steele St. Sunday School occurred Tuesday evening at 'the home of Mrs. J. D. Johnson, Mes dames Johnson and L C. Brewer be ing joint hostesses. The meeting was in charge of Mrs. Roy Moose, who conducted the de votional exercises. Mrs. W. L. Seawell gave a reading on “How to Make a Sunday School Class a Success” and Mrs. J. D. Hill told of “A Direct An swer to Prayer.” During the business session various committees reported and the class i .planned its social service work for the I summer. A picnic was also planned, j A most interesting musical contest j was staged during the social hour, I Mrs. R. L. Bums gave a humorous | reading and Mrs. W. A. Freeman } gave several piano solos. The host I esses served delicious fruit salad, sandwiches, saltincs, and iced tea, and I the plates were graced with sprays of sweet peas. Birthday Party. ' Tuesday afternoon little Mias Car roll Foust was given a party it be ing her 9th birthday. The children spent a pleasant afternoon playing* out and indoor games. Carroll received many gifts which all enjoyed seeing her open them. The refreshments were ice cream, cake, peanuts and favors. Those present were Norman Faulk, J. P. COLLEGE GRADUATES AND TEACHERS ENTERTAINED BY SANFORD MASONIC CLUB On Tuesday, Jund 17, the Sanford : Masonic Club entertained the boys and girls of Lee county who had been graduated from college this year. The teachers who reside in the county but during the past year have taught out side were also guests of the Club. An excellent club-plate supper was served, the menu consisting of as sorted cold meats, sandwiches, beaten biscuit, pickles and relish, Russian salad, iced tea, ice cream and cake. While cigars and cigarettes were pass ed a number of talks were made. The Club Chancellor, Dr. R. O. Humphrey; greeted the guests, the address of welcome was very ably delivered by Mr. J. W. Stout, who presented some splendid ideas in the “Pursuit of Hap piness," the topic of his talk Mr. Clyde Foushee made the response for ! the guests. H. F. Makepeace,, the newly elected Master of ithe Blue Lodge, the office being the highest honor that can be conferred upon a master mason, made a short but very interesting tal!4 tfci Masonic work Mr. J. S. Truitt, the principal of the High School followed and stated that he had probably issued more college entrance certificates than any other high school principal in*, the county. Mr. Truitt had graduated most of ’those present from the local high school. Mr. H. C. Renegar, Sanford at tomey and former school superintend ent, delivered a fine talk which he interspersed with many humorous re marks. Miss Elizabeth Cross and ^Frances Welkins spoke briefly, the former a teacher and the latter a recent graduate, from Greensboro vyuuege. .After the supper a program of en tertainment was much enjoyed in the Club rooms. The following furnished the entertainment: Miss Billie James, , Ballet and Charleston dancing, a boys quartette from Jonesboro under the direction of Mrs. W. H. Campbell; i Miss Jan^fte Stout gave several hu j morous readings; Dr. Charles Hall , | sang some old ballads, and the splen i did vocal solos of Miss Kloie Bass ■ completed the program.
